About Mark Cheren

This website is about a book I have recently finished writing. I have been advancing the ideas in this book for quite some time. I published an early version as “Some Thoughts on Work in America" back in 1976 in the New Schools Exchange Newsletter. Not long after, I spoke with Ohio Congressman Louis Stokes about my vision. He thought it made sense and tried to generate support for what I was proposing in the U.S. House of Representatives. Unfortunately, we were ahead of our time and the ideas weren't as well developed back then as they are now.

Over the years, I have also shared evolving drafts of this book with other political, governmental, and educational leaders. I have found most to be receptive. One was Erskine Bowles when he was the head of the Small Business Administration and later when he was President of the University of North Carolina. When George Voinovich was governor of Ohio, his educational policy advisor found the ideas to be promising, as did Ohio State Representative Ed Kasputis and Cuyahoga County (Ohio) Executive, Armond Budish.

My hope is that given the threat we now face of massive joblessness and underemployment, the time may finally be right for this vision to take flight.

My background includes various administrative roles in colleges, universities and continuing medical education, and a stint in human resource development.
